Transfer interest of MBB office in Tier 2 city to a Tier 1 office application

I am coming from an academic background and I am contemplating moving into strategy consulting. I attended a recent event at an MBB's office and received encouraging indications that I should move forward.

The MBB is trying to grow its practice in this Tier II city, which is closest to my school.

However, my boyfriend and I want to do be able to begin living together, and that's likely in a particular Tier 1 city.

-> Is there any way to take the MBB's interest they've shown in their Tier 2 office and use it for the Tier 1 city?
-> Put differently, is their interest in me purely regional, or across their offices?

Are the cities in the same country or are you considering Tier 1 cities like London and Tier 2 like Madrid? If so, it could be a language thing. Regardless, the best way to go about it would be to apply and get as far as possible (ideally to an offer) and mention you have 'an interest to start a family' and would ideally like to be with your boyfriend. McKinsey operates a global staffing model where consultants from any office can be on engagements in any country so having you based in location X won't make a huge difference compared to location Y.

Other things to consider are the growing business as you said. They may not have space in tier 1 city yet and want you to spend 1-2 years in tier 2 city where you can then move. Alternatively it could be an industry thing. If your field of expertise is industry related (e.g. O&G) moving to a city in a nation where that industry is small won't make sense to them.

Either way, get to the offer then think about it. It's an MBB. If you really want consulting, this is a seriously good opportunity. Worst case you guys could try 1-2 years of distance. If this is your only way to start a consulting career and 1-2 years distance would be too much for your boyfriend then it may say a lot about him.
