UNC Kenan Flagler for MBB (Undergrad)

Hello WSO monkeys, I was wondering if going to Kenan Flagler will give me a shot at a job at McKinsey in NYC (I live right near there). Any tips / things to focus on would also be appreciated. Thank you thank you!

In my opinion, its good enough of a school where it won't make it impossible for you, but it definitely won't be doing you any favors. MBB tends to target Ivys and other schools of that caliber. With the right networking, high GPA , and a little bit of luck, I'm sure you can land an interview. From there, the ball is your court. From my MBB class, I think there is a total of like two people from non Ivy's/Stanford/MIT. One was from a non Target, and one was from a low Target. If you do well there your first year, transferring to a better school might give you an edge but isn't crucial. Also, UNC would set you up pretty well for getting into a solid MBA program which you could then use to recruit for MBB. Again, this is just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt. You can also do your own DD by going on LinkedIn and searching for firms and then filtering by the number of alumni.

Also, on a side note, I've seen that Bain tends to look more kindly upon non-target schools, especially in their regional offices. McKinsey and BCG seem to have a bit more emphasis placed on pedigree (McK being the most focused) from what I've seen also.

Ah I see - I definitely hope to land an internship at McKinsey which might boost my chances a bit as well. Thanks for the detailed input!

Very difficult for NY. Decent placement into Dallas/Atlanta assuming good profile. MBB recruiting is heavily “pull” based by the alums. If you do well in your first round, they might call you to talk through office rankings again if you voiced NY (just given the chance). You will have to really impress during your interviews bc ppl will pick kids from their schools and usually partners have “favorites” that are typically from their own schools
