Is semiconductors a big enough space that there are verticals dedicated to it?
Yes.......
Corp dev at semis. Have also seen some leave for industrials focused investment teams in PE given the overlap. Also other random, non-semis related things.
?? This post and preceding comments and brain dead but I’ll bite.
semis is always a part of the tech group where analysts are not verticalized but generalists across (usually) semis, software, and internet.
semis is more technical than the latter two because companies are mature with stable cash flows, and there is much more M&A and debt deals - I would say M&A leans strategic vs sponsor since the industry has been in consolidation phase. Semis is great for modeling experience so semis and software are usually the preferred route for analysts who want to do buyout, whereas internet / sw is better for analysts wanting to do earlier stage stuff
Semi as a sector is less growth-oriented and more consolidation-focused as you alluded to. It is not really a sponsor-hot sector given the cyclicality and supply chain issues the sector faces. Also, software is definitely better for those who want to go into growth and other types of early-stage investing so I agree there.
