Help! Interview dilemma!

Hi Everybody,

So I'm interviewing for a job "selling research to institutions." The problem is, I have no idea what the job requires. The company I'm meeting with is a hedge fund that has developed an original system for investing in equities. They want me to sell it to institutional investors. I've passed the first interview with flying colors, but that's because they take for granted that I know the answer to this very obvious question: who are these institutional investors? Money managers at major wirehouses like Merill? Other hedge funds? Banks? Where do I get a list of these guys, so I can have some idea who they are when I go to the second interview? How does the process work, exactly? please help!

I'm sure there's a lot more info in that forum than here. In general, you'd likely be selling to insurance companies, pensions, mutual funds, endowments, etc. I doubt hedge funds or ML would buy from you, considering 1) you called them a "wirehouse" and 2) you're going for a research position but couldn't find a definition of institutional investors

There you go, I'm learning something already. All of this might seem like first grade stuff to you guys, but it's news to me. I come from a sales background, but have never sold research -- or anything else -- on Wall St. So thanks for the advice, and bear with me. drexelalum11, thanks for the info -- you mentioned a forum? Which one did you mean? And what is the title of the person who makes the decision on whether to buy the research?
