Blue leather?
Saw this article on WSJ saying that blue leather is coming into style for men.
My Thoughts:
I'm not a fan. I feel that it's more of a statement since I have yet to see blue leather in any board room I've been in. Maybe as time goes on, it'll become a more popular "3rd option" but I don't see it overtaking brown or black. The blue always reminds me of The Wedding Singer, even though the shades are on the opposite sides of the spectrum.
My bias:
In my line of work, it's a business casual (slacks and button up shirt) environment but will require a jacket and maybe a tie for client meetings. Since client meetings are sometimes spontaneous, I have shifted to a "uniform" mindset where I wear a white or blue shirt with gray or tan slacks daily. I'll rotate brown and black shoes/belt but favor the brown since they are my more comfortable pair. This way, I can keep a blue blazer at work and be ready to throw it on for the surprise client without worrying about a mismatched outfit.
Ending:
Maybe I'm too old fashioned for blue leather... what are your thoughts?
Not a fan unless you're trying to look different at a club. It can definitely be a fly style choice but not for the office. I'll stick to black and variations of brown there. The blue leather thing reminds me of suede. It can look really good but just not in a professional setting. I make an exception for watches with blue bands, but that's not really what this is about.
Keep in mind that the fashion industry has a huge incentive to create perceived need for something nobody is doing today: it's 100% net new business vs. replacement of something you've already worn until it's falling apart.
In a conservative professional services industry like Finance, I'd recommend living in the middle of the style curve (not bleeding edge, but also not a decade out of date) and focus on finding items that fit you well, made with high-quality materials. You should also take advantage of the relentlessly promotional pricing of the industry: unless you're buying made-to-measure, there's not reason to ever pay full price.
I completely see where you're coming from, but I have seen some individuals wear a nice dark, blue leather belt/shoe combo that comes off classy. Not to confuse classy with professional, but I think that having some nice blue leather for a Friday could work.

I am too not a fan of blue leather. I do like black leather.
I don't do leather at all unless it's on my belt or shoes. I'm not a 6 foot 3 hulk. I think men that big can pull it off. I think my taste is absurd, but I personally feel way to obnoxious wearing blue leather or leather jackets being only 5 10 and that too with a lanky build.
I don't do Rolexes either for the same reason.
Blue leather makes sense if you have a closet full of "staple" coats. If not, get the classics first (black leather, army green military jacket, something quilted, tan/khaki trench, etc.)
I probably would never do a full on blue leather jacket but I do see it working for accessories like wallets, gloves and even a briefcase. It just more refreshing from your standard black or shades of brown without being too outlandish.
