Equity Derivative Trading to HF
Starting a career on a single stock vol desk and wanted to know what kinds of opportunities could be open a few years down the line in the investment management universe. Always loved analyzing equities from a value perspective, and I was curious how I can keep the door open to potentially joining a HF later in my career. What can I do to make myself a more attractive candidate and keep my investment skills sharp while on the desk?
Stay on your vol desk a year or two, that'll be enough to soak up some useful stuff. Transition over to investment banking or equity research after that, depending on which types of funds you're targeting. Do that for two years or so and you should be able to get interviews at funds for fundamental analyst roles. Your vol experience will come in handy when you're thinking about the best way to express bets (especially for fast money funds). But you still need the fundamental background from IB/ER to be an analyst. Unfortunately I don't see a direct path from a vol desk to a fund analyst role.
