Need Advice: I Want to Start a Small Investment Fund with My Father
Hi all,
It’s been my dad’s life-long dream to start an investment fund of his own. I wanted to slowly make that happen, but I need some advice on what we should do.
To give a little bit of background about us, I have been working as a prop trader for about 3 years now after graduating a decent undergraduate business school as a finance major. I dove into the field being clueless about trading and tried my best to learn from other traders, broadcasters, and books to become a profitable trader. My dad has been a retail trader for about 30 years in South Korean market and has recently been forced into retirement due to the formal-President scandal involvement and bankruptcy filed by the company he worked for in South Korea. He came to visit me at my apartment in New York afterwards, and we started to combine our trading methods together with fairly good and consistent returns on our trades for the past few months.
Starting an investment company of his own was my father’s dream for as long as I can remember, and after seeing our performance together, my father wants to start taking small steps forward. He wants to start by making business cards that he can carry around ASAP and show his friends in South Korea since he wants to maintain a certain level of reputation and people who trade the markets without “proper education” and corporate industry experience are very much looked down upon in their culture.
In reality, the fund will most likely be me and my father trading together with our own money under my personal account until we can establish a good enough track record to start attracting serious investors. I want to make my dad a business card that would satisfy his ego and make him happy. I am looking to put a fund name on the card that can be transitioned into a real fund later on. I am thinking of something like “JS Investment Group, LLP” as LLP seems to be what lots of boutiques in the industry go for--it'll probably be a while until we register the name with FINRA since I would need to end the association with my current prop trading firm and take a new Series test to be an official fund manager.
Can you guys give us some of your thoughts and advice on this idea?
Thank you!
