Steps to break into the industry as a Comp Sci major

I'm a comp sci major at CU (University Of Colorado | Boulder) and I understand that it will be an uphill battle but my intention is to get a HFT (High Frequency Trading) algo development job at a hedge fund. I had a few Ideas that I wanted to run past you guys. I was thinking of contributing to open source HFT projects or trying to get on a research project with a professor. Any other ideas??
