Can I have a company in my own name and still be an investment banker?
Hi, I will graduate in March 2024 from a French top tier school. I am already in the IB process for few BB banks but I have a RE selling/renting company under my name (I own 60% of shares) because I own the real estate licence in France, and have company revenue of c.100k a years, I don't have to manage it a lot since the goal for me with this is to allow people without the licence to do RE.
So my question is the following: Does Investement banks allow the bankers to own a company ? (Even if I don't spend more than 5-10 hours a week on it)
No because they i) want you to be 100% focused on what they are paying you to do, ii) want to avoid potential conflicts of interest and iii) need to be able to audit your investments (and doing that for a private company through which you can trade increases bureaucracy, costs etc).
Don’t see why not? It’s only a few $100k a year
Depends on the firm and what they consider outside business activities. Should be fine if it’s a small thing that’s unrelated to your work. Bankers inherit equity ownership in private small business from their parents all the time so there’s usually a policy around it
