Georgetown MSB vs. Uchicago

Hello WSO,

I am a freshman at a west coast semi-target (think UCLA/Berkeley/USC) and have not enjoyed my time. I am from the east coast originally and am looking to move back east.

I am lucky enough to have been admitted as a transfer to these two places, and am completely torn about which to choose. I am interested in IB, as well as MF PE/MM HF directly from undergrad if possible.

I know in terms of placement, they are similar, but one have a small edge over the other? Beyond placement, is one more prestigious than the other outside of finance?

Also, how do they compare socially? Chicago has long been known as a place where students have no fun, is that still the case today? How fun is Georgetown? If anyone has transferred to either place, any insight would be appreciated.

One concern I have is that I may find a business school education boring, whereas UChicago Econ will be undoubtedly intellectually stimulating. How stimulating is finance at Georgetown MSB in comparison?

Decide based on ethos of the school. If you want to be at a hedge fund long run, UChicago Econ will probably build the best foundation given guys like Eugene Fama have come out of there. It’s much more academic and geography wise much further away from NY than GTown. I would also say UChicago is academically equivalent to the ivies and the graduate business school may provide ample business research opportunities.
That being said, Georgetown is steeped in policy and closer to New York + I love the campus vibes and DC overall. I think you’re in a good spot with either of them but talk to students at both places and figure out what kind of people you want to surround yourself with. MSB will be very preprofessional and similar to Ross/Stern, UChi will be research heavy unless you do BizEcon. I’d personally go with UChicago as I know the faculty there truly value free speech (check FIRE ranking), the school is heralded in academia for econ, and you’ll get plenty of time to be on the Atlantic seaboard.

MSB all day imo. Chicago is kind of a miserable school. Total sweatshop, literal IB level WLB in college and lots of odd people who are obsessed with academics. Georgetown has better placement and I don’t think it’ll close any doors for you on the buyside that UChicago would open. Congrats and good luck with your choice!

Thanks for the response. I understand that GU has better placement by numbers (Peak Frameworks), but how do they compare in terms of individual likelihood of placing? I would imagine that given that Georgetown MSB is a business school, the strikeout percentage might be higher than that of UChicago.

Good point. Either way, I still think go MSB. Grads have way better outcomes than UChicago, which is particularly awful on that front. I just think Chicago is a waste of 4 years and will be very stressful for no reason. I know plenty of Georgetown kids. Definitely not many geniuses over there. Will be pretty easy to place out of either IMO, but Chicago will be an academic slog. Either way, congrats. Quick question for me, between Williams and rice which would you go with?

Simple answer is UChi for research/bookish vibes with deep academic expertise, Georgetown for more holistic education & experience (given underpinning in policy/politics) but still massive target school for high finance

Thanks for the response. Interesting that you'd consider GU education holistic, given that someone above compared it to Ross/Stern. Is that true even of MSB? What was your opinion of the GU core curriculum?
