I'm curious because in the UK, there are presentations and emails handed out for you to reach out to and people generally answer and talk to you. Are groups in the US really snooty re non targets even AFTER you got an offer? That sounds pretty messed up.....
Presentations and email handouts happened but very close to the date picks were done. But for 6 months before that people usually reach out to alumni. I also don't blame the groups and don't think it's snotty. I feel it's less about them looking down on nontargets and more about them just wanting to help their alumni first. I would do the same thing lol.
Hey OP - 1) there will be chances to switch out, and 2) you should try to give the group a chance. Anecdotally, I felt very screwed a few years ago when I started and got placed in ECM/DCM (product groups are usually a separate recruiting process - was totally blindsided here, told they just needed more heads). Trust me, I was upset.
Ended up really liking the group (the team, the work, the hours) and went A2A. There were people in my group who moved to industry coverage groups, so even if I didn't like it, transferring was an option. Looking back on it, I'm thankful for what happened. Had I actually been put in a group I desired, I likely would've had much worse WLB and burnt out. Of course, I got lucky that the group was a good fit for me, but man this post related to me hard so wanted to share my experience.
I had the same experience. I got placed in DCM / ECM and was initially disappointed. Looking back I would have hated being in the coverage groups I thought I wanted. I would have burned out. My pay is better than my coverage partners, get better client exposure, and have a far superior wlb.
When I was an SA I was placed on a group that I thought couldn't be worse or possibly anymore boring...I ended up starting my career in it and has led me to getting great opportunities and I ended up falling in love with it. Be open minded and make the best of it. I was also a complete non target from a school no one has heard of with a 90% acceptance rate.
