MSC Finance at Warwick vs boutique consulting
Looking for some advice! I graduated last year and missed out on FT IB recruiting by falling out in the final round at 3 BB banks (pretty bummed, but also chuffed as in my country BB only recruit 1 or 2 full time analysts).
I was fortunate to get a position at a reputable international boutique consultancy (started this year). The firm is great in that it offers global staffing, pays for top MBAs, etc... However, I had always had my sights set on IB (call me crazy- but the only way I will ever know if my subconscious bias towards IB is justified by actually giving it a shot).
Then- last week I got accepted into Warwick’s MSC Finance with a scholarship (on a waitlist at Imperial)- should I take the chance to move to the UK and take a shot at full time IB recruiting for positions in 2022? Or should I wait out the next 3/4 years at my firm, do the MBA and then try out IB?
Went to Warwick to do the exact same course and would highly recommend it. Opens up a lot of doors to IB recruiters
The fact that you got to the final rounds of BBs means your CV or school isn't the issue, it's your interview skills/technical competencies. You can easily work on those without the need for an MFin. Either way, you have to wait a year to try IB FT recruitment again. I would take the consultancy since you will 1. get more practical work experience (even consulting experience is good for IB) 2. get paid and 3. potentially end up liking consulting and sticking with it. By doing the MFin you may add that to your CV, but 1. you don't need it since you passed BB recruitment without it previously 2. still spend money on the MFin 3. lose out on a year of earning.
I wouldn't miss out on this opportunity, especially since you say the firm is so great.
As much as I believe there is room for improvement, I don’t fully believe my interview skills is the one. 3 of the BB MDs that interviewed commended me on my interview skills- the reason I didn’t get hired were given straight to me (one went for an experienced hire as they didn’t have the appetite to train with COVID WFH, the others were to do with political reasons / requirements within my country that I don’t want to get into).
The above reasons are also why I am leaning towards using the warwick opportunity to move abroad and break into IB abroad. So the way I see it- I wait 3 years, do an MBA and do the move. Or do the move now through the mfin now (as the future is uncertain, the opportunity to shift overseas may not present itself again). My only fear with the latter is that who says I’ll get an opportunity that is at least as good as mine now.
Also- by doing the mfin, I certainly won’t fully close the doors to do an MBA later on.
Can't you move internally within the boutique or move after 12 months of working?
