Tips on writing to school alumni

Wondering if people had an effective format or tips on how to write to alumni to network and hopefully reach out in order to score some internships.

These would be people I have not met in person but found on LinkedIn and other online sources (School site etc..)

Never done it before so wanted to see what has worked and hasn't worked for you all.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have found alumni to be very receptive, even to a brief LinkedIn message (this may be largely due to the fact that am from a non-target school and therefore alumni on Wall Street don't hear from current students very often). I typically mention that I am a current student interested in their field and would appreciate the chance to speak with them about their experiences.
