Transferring internally to Europe Office

I work for an UMM firm in the NYC office who has an office in Europe that I am particularly interested in.While I speak the language, I am an American citizen who has no ties to this country and my only desire to transfer is to fulfill a life goal of living in this particular country / abroad. I've only been with my group for about 9 months now and I think I still am learning the ropes - so I know that could be an issue. How would one go about trying to transfer offices, reach out directly to an MD there? Ask our own group heads - if so should I have an offer in hand to leave if they don't transfer me (this could happen as I am recruiting for off-cycle / immediate start PE opportunities and am in the final stages of many opps but they are all NYC based rather than abroad).

What do you guys think is the best way to handle this?

Are you an analyst? Most firms are open to this after usually 2 years, some of the more lateral-minded firms let you go at 1 year. If you've seen people jumping around in your time there... or not... you should have an idea of which way your firm leans. I think you're still too early if you are analyst 1, would aim for associate 1.

This isn't a super formal conversation. You could even just raise it with a VP you don't report to, just to test the waters "ever seen anyone move between these offices? wow XXX Euro country would be cool to live in huh" and see what the reaction is, perhaps they move people frequently and you're not aware. Then take it to your direct manager, no need to go around your team to a foreign MD or start with your group head. Places are usually pretty understanding about mobility but you do need to do your time before you ask and go about it respectfully.

Would be very unusual for a firm to let you go for floating the idea casually. Plenty of people want to live abroad for a bit. That said, I don't think any reputable firm is going to let you transfer at 9 months, or even talk about transferring before minimum 12-18 months, so if you're looking at immediate start opportunities elsewhere you're too early to try to move at your own firm.
