Where to live if working in Long Island

My friend's going to be working for a hedge fund in Long Island. Since it's a pretty small shop, it's up to him to take care of housing and transportation. Do you guys think he should be living in New York City or Long Island? He'll be saving a lot of money if he lives in Long Island, and can sleep longer, but he's worried that he won't be where the action is if he lives there. What do you guys think? How difficult is it to take the Long Island Railroad every morning? Is it worth it? This is for the summer.

My friend works in NYC right now, and lives in Long Island and he says it sucks ass taking the LIRR. My friend also says your friend is a dipshit for even considering paying an arm, a leg, and a left nut to live in NYC while earning 2 pinky toes working in Long Island over the summer. My friend says your friend should look for a place in Western Nassau/Queens if he wants to be closer to NYC.

while the action is clearly more in NYC, hempstead/farmingdale has an ok night scene due to its proximity to hofstra university...reverse commuting is insane, live on LI, come to NYC on wknds

Man I wish I could work in LI - not only because of the cheaper rent but because much of Manhattan is dirty and rat-infested (even the nice parts) and it sucks to be there 24/7, even if you are a city person. I know tons of people who commute for an hour each way not because they couldn't afford a huge sweet place in the city but because they want to get as far away from downtown Manhattan as possible after spending the whole day there.

Def long island like everyone else said. Mineola is a big hub considering that's a main stop with the LIRR, 36 minute train ride to penn.

I think I know where your friend is working. But anyone there is good night life on Long Island. Its not as good as NYC but the beauty of Long Island is being able to go to NYC whenever you want. Also the LIRR is a rip off. Your friend is better off getting an apartment in Mineola or somewhere in that area. Rockville Centre has some nice apartments and good night life.
