All my class buddies got accepted into IB, not me.

After being a lurker on this forum for a while, I have finally decided to register.

Currently, I am in my first year at HEC (I did preparatory classes). A few months ago, I made the decision to apply for a professional gap year in IB. Unlike my classmates, I already have prior experience working in a Big 4 last summer and recently became a research assistant in finance. However, I am struggling to secure an internship compared to most of my friends who have already secured positions in the Bulge Bracket, despite lacking experience. It seems that many of them obtained their internships through their family connections.

I have already sent out an incredible number of applications. My grades are good, my CV and cover letters have been reviewed by HEC's "Career Center" and two teachers who were both MDs in IB.

Given my current situation, I am wondering what my next move should be. Would it be wise to pursue Transaction Services ? Is this too late to apply in IB or boutiques for a July intake ? Is HEC really that bad ?

I guess I'm not the only one in this situation.

would apply to all of the above and see what happens.

On day 1, this sucks and I'm sure youre disappointed but the bright side is that in the medium-term you have a group of buddies that can vouch for you at all the IBs. Having this network will serve you in the long-term. Keep pushing and if you're committed to making it you will.. eventually

You're right, I will continue to apply to every offer that seems interesting.

I don't find my friends' achievements to be frustrating, but what is really frustrating is that despite being at HEC, I am struggling to pass the initial screening for most job offers. Out of the many applications I've sent, only two boutiques have agreed to schedule an interview with me. I am really hoping that they will invite me for a second round.

If not, my gap year is composed of two 6-mounth internships, so I can still manage to get into IB for the second part.

It seems that many of them obtained their internships through their family connections.

Is this the norm in France?
