Asset Management Research vs Equity Research vs IBD
Hi guys,
I am interning at an AM firm doing research (100B+ AUM). Would ER or IBD broaden my skill set? I am unsure I want to stay in AM, so I am leaning towards doing full time recruiting for IBD.
Advice is appreciated.
Once in the buy side why would you want to leave?
IBD will give you the broadest skill set and broadest exit ops. If those are your top concerns AND you are not sure if you want to stay in AM, then get a return offer and leverage it for a FT banking offer.
IBD builds a modeling skill set, which is good for Pe. Am/ER is better for fundamental hf
AM, ER, or IB? (Originally Posted: 11/04/2013)
I am a graduating senior, my dilemma is that I am uncertain which area of finance I am looking to enter. My experience thus far has been two internships, one with a small wealth management shop and one with the private bank of a large regional bank.
Because all of my experience has been PWM/portfolio management, and because I am more keen on working with institutions than individuals, I feel that Asset Management would be my best bet. I also believe equity research could be a possible outlet as I have been focused on working with the equity sides of portfolios through these internships.
On the other hand, I am interested in IB because I want to be involved in large corporate deals, I could swing my equity research involvement to my advantage here.
I know that this is obviously a personal decision, but what I am asking is, given my previous experience, what is the most logical, "natural" career path?
Thank you for your help!
