Current Canadian Semi-Target Optics?

How does the current recruiting scene for Canadian semi-targets (Ivey/Queen’s) to US BB/EBs look?

Is it easy to lateral from Toronto regional offices (EB/BB) to NYC after a year, and still have the same/strong exits to PE/HF?

still happens but visas are really hard so has been declining in past years. if biden doesn't win in november it's not looking good. both schools probably sending ~25 ish combined south this year, and there's like 12 roles across the Toronto BB/EB's so it's tough to bet on. Scene def getting tougher.

BB's don't really take aside from 1-2 exceptions, EB's are generally open to it but bar is higher

It's getting harder - placements in the US for top Canadian b-schools aren't close to 2017 numbers. The visa issue has caused some EB's and all BB's to stop coming to Canadian campuses so between Queens & Ivey placements are less than 25 in the states. Must be the cream of the crop (4.0, top investment club, other EC's...) to at least get a look from a US bank.....

Heard that there were a couple who got CS this year, what were numbers for US like back in 2016-17?

On the one hand, it's true that visas are a headache and there are only a few places that do hire Canadians. On the other hand, you can't think of your own chances in the context of everyone in general, otherwise you'll only get discouraged. If you want to recruit for the US, then go for it. In a sense, since there are fewer places, you know which ones to focus your efforts on. Some of it may be due to luck with networking to get your foot in the door with an interview invitation. But even if you don't get a US internship, you're still well positioned for recruiting in Canada. Not much extra work in terms of interview preparation, other than networking. But networking is necessary no matter which bank you want to work for, whether in Canada or the US.

Yeah - but I would argue that the NY scene is incomparable (at least from what I’ve read) to Canada in terms of career optionality and trajectory. I would assume that it’s much, much harder to exit into top PE or HF from Canada, even if it’s a regional NY based BB (GS toronto, etc).

Do you have any insight on how feasible it would be to exit into top PE/HF from Canadian banks? What about BB NY based Toronto regional offices?
