Any Sailors or Wannabe Sailors?
I have recently found a large interest in sailing and was wondering if there are any sailors in the forums.
I am still pretty young and not ready to go out and buy a boat yet. Is there any way I can get sailing experience without owning my own boat. I heard somewhere that buying a boat is the worst investment you can make. I do not have any friends that sail, and do not live in a marine community, but I do plan on moving soon.
Please feel free to discuss all matters about sailing in the discussion.
Yes, sailing is #1, it is also expensive to buy a boat. Look into yacht clubs, they usually have courses and boats you can take out.
I own a boat, although not a sailboat. Definitely take a class and then charter a boat. I’ve done a bit of sailing over the years, you can be somewhat limited based on your geographic location, sailboats have deeper drafts. Just get out there and see what you enjoy.
I haven't been able to sail much recently as I've been so busy with education and starting my career but there is nothing better than a mid-winter journey south of Florida or a New England summer on the boat. Definitely echo the above statement about trying to find a club. Despite the "stuffy" reputation yacht clubs have, I've found that most (though there are definitely some that perpetuate this) are friendly to new members that actually have a passion. If you have a friend or two who's family is a member at a club, I'd recommend asking them to let you tag along and specifically mention that you're looking for a club to join, I've found that older guys often carry the devotion you'd find in their fraternity days to their clubs today and will definitely advocate for a children's friend to gain an invitation.
I still havent gotten into swabbing poopdecks with seamen. My bro sails though and enjoys it. I could see where it would be relaxing.
I left seaman on your mom's poop deck :)
Vaping > sailing
pls fix vaping while sailing >>>>>>>>
Love sailing, took a starter small boat then big boat class. The class paired us with skippers that turned into buds, I join in when the weather's nice and I'm in town for the weekend.
I sail on Long Island Sound. It's a great sport and really becomes a lifestyle. Definitely make friends with someone who owns a boat and join their Yacht Club. It's the best way to learn.
I used to own a 1981 Catalina 22. Got it for about $5k in excellent condition. I’d highly recommend the Annapolis Guide to Seamanship. It is a really comprehensive book.
slightly unrelated but I wish I could take a year off in my 20s to work hard on some (fishing) ship in deep sea waters. The dream would be hunting whales in the day and dealing with 60+ feet waves regularly. It would be such an unique experience.
That what the next recession is for.

Another sailing enthusiast here, you could also look to see if your city has a club dedicated to sailing. Being in MD, several towns have clubs just for folks who don't have boats.
If you happen to be in Chicago, Detroit, or Cleveland, you'll have access to quite a few clubs on the great lakes. As mentioned previously, the members are generally friendly and interested in helping people that show an interest.
I would also like to learn one day, and go on a trip like this.
A lot of the comments have been from people who seem to be pretty experienced. I recently got interested in sailing this past summer and took a few sailing lessons. I would recommend going on Groupon and finding a discounted set of lessons and using that to gauge your actual interest before diving in. It'll also give you a head start on learning, and expose you to an instructor and company that does sailing lessons. If you like the lessons and the instructor stick with it and keep going
We get it bro, you wear sperrys and Nantucket reds. Much WASP, so prestige.
