Dashcam (+ Radar?) Recommendations
Hey WSO -
Hope you all have had a safe and healthy weekend. Wondering if I could pique some interest from WSO's resident car community and others who have had success in this space. It's about time I get a proper dashcam, the last one I had was two cars ago. Coincidentally, that dashcam saved me in an accident, so figured I had to get another. Been two years and it's just slipped my mind.
Also want to get a proper radar detector. I know that Waze works fine for 98% of travel, and I'm the last man that you'll find weaving thru traffic on the interstate going 30+ over, but it's another peace of mind issue. Do plan to take my M2 on some windy roads back here, and from what I have seen is simple: TX Highway Patrol does not fuck around. Wanted to get something that'll last me forever.
Currently thinking about a Garmin 67W for the cam and a Uniden R8 for the radar. Will get both of them hardwired and tucked for constant usage, no relying on batteries and seeing wires float everywhere. I'm not to concerned about a rear-view camera, or a rear-facing front camera, personally. Just want something that'll get my front angle with 4K quality, instant recording, and the ability to wirelessly upload to my phone and computer.
If anyone has any other recs, let me know. Appreciate it!
The R8 is a solid choice. With radar detectors, I think you gotta get the best ($400+ range) or not bother bc it'll give you a false sense of security with the less effective cheaper models. Even with the best, you're not bulletproof and still need to combine situational awareness...Detectors will only alert when a cop has their radar gun turned on. Most are lazy, but the smart cops will keep their gun off to avoid detection while hiding, then flip it on when they suspect a speeding car- in this case, you're kinda fucked bc their the radar waves off their gun moves at the speed of light so your chances of being able to slow down in time are slim.
Also, some highway troopers use laser guns rather than radar. Radar detectors can pick up laser but given the superior tech of laser, you're likely screwed by then. Laser jammers are effective but cost another $500+
I’m currently running a VIOFO A129 Pro and a Uniden R7 on my M4. Couldn’t be happier with both.
No gripes with the dashcam. Definitely not the best out there in terms of sheer quality, but it’s great value for the money. Does not upload directly to your phone, but I just use a micro sd to lightning adapter instead. I honestly find it easier than dealing with bluetooth/wifi.
The R7 is incredible and has saved me more times than I can count. If I were to buy a new radar, I would definitely stick with Uniden and get the R8.
I’d also look into laser jammers. Not sure if Texas uses laser, but if so, it may be worth the investment. Unfortunately learned that the hard way.
