Losing a Mentor

Recently found out the news that my mentor passed away, and unfortunately at a young age <55. Everything he taught me professionally helped me become a better person both in the workplace and out of the workplace. During our lunch chats and work trips he would continuously humble me on the dumb and young egotistical things I would say when I first began. Has anyone else ever lost a mentor before? This loss hurts a bit extra.

It’s essentially the loss of a friend. Give yourself time to grieve. It’s much easier said than done, but remember them through the positive impact they’ve had on your life (and will continue to have) rather than focus on the tragedy of their passing. You can’t bring them back in the physical sense, but their memory and impact can live on so long as you learn from them and get better everyday. True mentors care less about how much advice you heed, and more about you becoming the best version of yourself.
