Mac vs. PC

Hi all. I'm in the market for a new laptop with a budget under $2K. I'm torn between the Macbook Air M1 and the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9. The Macbook Air seems like a pretty sick device but I've been a Window guys my whole life. I'll never need the full capabilities of either laptop but I just want something nice (some light Microsoft office use, storing personal files, web browsing, streaming etc.)

I know this topic has been discussed before, but in the context of college students. I'm wrapping up my third year as an analyst and want something to replace my 4+ yr old 400$ Thinkpad. Thought?

At the end of the day, most modern laptops will fulfill the needs of the majority of consumers.
I had Windows PCs until I was 21 and then switched to Mac's. I initially said - wow, this is awesome. Once you go Mac, you never go back!

But there is some specific software that doesn't run properly on MacOS (in my case, software apps to flash car ECUs and other modules). Unless you have those specific situations, you should be good to go.

Things I noticed that are different on Macs

- In some cases, need for specific hardware or designs. Good example are keyboards that would need the Mac keys. Even custom/built keyboards running QMK have sometimes issues with MacOS. Hardware with decent MacOS support tends to be more expensive.

- While gaming support has improved on MacOS, it is nowhere near Windows. If you even occasionally want to play decent games, I would go the Windows route.

- I believe Mac hardware is too expensive. The entry level Macbook Pro is at 2K dollars and they are likely introducing a new one tomorrow during their spring event.

Hey so I actually just bought my 2nd Mac because of storage/run time issues.. however, most offices I’ve worked in have PCs so if you want to apply your knowledge of keyboard shortcuts so you can model more efficiently keep it consistent & stick w the PC. Personally, I think having a Mac is cute but it’s a whole different beast trying to balance between using both. #teampc

When I chose my computer, I was guided by video games that would be in good scenery and memory. And in this case I was advised to use MAC. So it depends on what characteristics you want to expect. After buying I immediately downloaded my Minecraft and found Minecraft Parkour Servers where I have fun as I can. It's where you can do parkour with your character and get over different obstacles. I was just stuck for a few hours. Are there any other fans of video games?

I have a gaming computer too but went with Windows on a Lenovo Legion laptop.

2020 Mac M1 Air base model is a great choice and I’ll probably get it later as well, if you can wait for the summer student deals in your country (starts end of June usually until September, check online) you can also get free set of AirPods and a big discount on the Mac, which will cost around 900 USD if you use the student deal I believe. I would also recommend against the newer Mac models from 2021 and later in 2022 - I don’t think they’re as good in terms of weight, size, design and obviously price.

Lenovo usually has deals at the end of the year so you probably can’t hold out. However, you can search the Lenovo website for Lenovo students and type in your university name and see if you can find it. Otherwise type in some random university as I don’t think they check, and you can get a greater discount on the computer. Otherwise if you know someone at work with Workperks or something you can also ask them about it, but generally I think the student discount is still better. X1 carbon is also a great choice, definitely can’t go wrong with it.

Overall based on your needs I think the basics + web surfing => Mac is going to be better. If you have an iPhone it also works with the ecosystem that apple has. You can use the rest of your budget to get a monitor at home if you don’t have 1-2 already. Helps a ton with productivity and also not needing to strain your eyes.

Good luck!
