Should I get a work phone?
I’ve been on the fence about this for a while now. My personal phone gets bombarded with teams messages and emails, resulting in all personal notifications being sent to the shadow realm until I have time to scroll through everything to see them.
Of course it’s one more thing to carry around but my bank does cover the majority of the monthly bill.
Pros:
- will be able to see my personal messages and notifications easier
- can just put my work number in the mobile line of my email so no work ppl hit my personal line
Cons:
- one extra thing to carry around
Cheers
If you're using an unlocked newer iPhone, multiple phone lines can be installed on the same phone via eSIMs. I have a personal Tmobile line and an AT&T line for work on the same iPhone. It doesn't help with your notification issue, but I prefer the convenience of having one phone while still having some separation
I use double sim and have customized my notification settings so all personal notifications is muted - not because I want them muted, but because the phone saves them and it makes it very easy to go through them without teams/outlook etc pushing them down.
Yes. I have one because I dont want anything work related on my personal device
In theory I like the idea, but I had double phones for 6 months and hated carrying two.
Picture this - it's Saturday early afternoon. You just spend 3 hours turning comments for a pitch on Tuesday and sent it to your VP. Do you expect to be able to go "hang with the boys" without your work phone for the rest of the day? Not saying this is right, but I'd guess your VP would not be thrilled for you to go radio silent for 24 hours because you left your 2nd phone home. Also, having two phones in a social setting sounds terrible.
Maybe it's different now since the protected Saturday's, etc., although those weren't around when I did IB so could be a dated perspective.
I don't want anything work related on a personal device as a rule.
As a discussion though, operate under the assumption that your files and the devices they are on are subject to corporate policy because that's what you're exposing yourself to if you use one device.
Most of this is unlikely to affect most people but:
Legal problem or regulatory problem, there go your personal files. Security problem and there's a remote wipe, there go your personal files. Personnel problem and people have a conflict at work etc...
Some of this can be mitigated by having a device with proper enterprise grade device administrator support but it's not a direct replacement for dedicated devices.
I have a workphone because I don't want to accidentally send a tiktok to my Director or MD or smthn. Also keeps all work stuff separate.
But also, my personal device is a Samsung Galaxy. Work uses Blackberry UEM for BYOD. I don't know if you've used it, but Blackberry UEM has biometrics that allow you to use face ID to log in on Apple iPhones. On Samsungs, you need to input the password. So imagine my annoyance during my internship when because of a security setting, you would get logged out every 15 minutes and if I wanted to check my emails I had to input a 20+ character password each time. I didn't want to do that hassle FT so I got an iPhone as a secondary phone/work phone.
This might be an expensive answer to your problem, but if you do get a separate work phone, get an Apple Watch with cell connection so you know to prioritize carrying your work phone and your personal Apple Watch.
I agree with the premise of having two phones (though I personally don't have that setup either). In the past, emails were the only appropriate way for corporate communication. Today, people connect through a myriad of apps, and it becomes difficult to audibly differentiate between personal and work messages; they all just sound the same.
Your bank makes you pay for a work phone? That’s shitty.
I think it’s very practical. Yes, you can add a phone line assuming you have a newer device, but I don’t think it gives the same sense of separation you are looking for. You don’t even need to have the newest iPhone either, my work phone is just the newer gen iPhone SE.
2nd phone is definitely the way to go. The "hassle" of the second device immediately disappears if the SEC, DFS, compliance or audit come looking for your work device. I'm honestly not even sure the second line on the same device would be enough to prevent them from forcing you to turn over the device until things got sorted out.
There were even a few banks recently that got in trouble for having work conversations on Whatsapp. Don't recall the specifics surrounding these and whether they were work or personal cell phones, but for $20/month, why would you increase your potential personal liability?
The inconvenience of having to carry two phones is what made me decide to keep the one. My friends are also in the business as well, so things come up when I’m shooting the shit with them anyway that are relevant in a work context
