Stereotypes of your industry?

So every industry/job has its own collection of stereotypes,

Some right off the bat:

  • Software engineers are nerds who wear flip flops to work and enjoy craft beer

  • Lawyers are sleazy liars who wear nice suits

  • Accountants are incredibly promiscuous people with wild sex lives and interesting backgrounds

What's yours? Do you conform to it?

The accountant one couldn't be further from the truth, but that's the joke.

Quant (ˈkwänt) n: An expert, someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing.

One stereotype, in every industry, is applying the leading role to entire organization.

For example, saying everyone who works at Morgan or GS is in IB killing it. Similar to saying everyone who worked as NASA was an astronaut or everyone enlisted in the army is overseas killing terrorist. When organizations are that large, people on the outside tend to generalize.

I think it was Bill Burr who made the joke about army/navy, saying the guy who flies the plane on missions gets the same respect as the guy waving the flags back on the ship.

Wow I have a completely different view of lawyers.

Boring secretaries collecting a paycheck working for other people. Documenting things in a way that both sides of a business deal are protected. Everyne I know who went to big law is incredibly boring.

Criminal or a litigator might be a different story,

Trader - suicidal maniac who hates what he does but could never do anything else. I haven’t met one guy in the industry truly happy in a log time. Even guys pulling in 8 figures look constantly depressed.

Yeah. Honestly, I bet the average life expectancy for a full time career trader is 10 years lower than the general population.

True story, I correctly guessed a tinder connection was an accountant on the first try because she had a weird arrogant stupid-ass sense of humor. Pretty sure my accuracy in pointing out this correlation quietly crushed her soul. Odd thing is she was hot. Did not get the date.

Everyone that works in Real Estate is a Single-Family Home broker that drives around in a leased BMW and wants to be like Alec Baldwin's character from Glengarry Glen Ross.

More or less true, except for the broker part. There are some serious douchebags in this industry. Our CFO has one of the worst senses of humor I've ever witnessed in a person, and it's like watching a trainwreck when he talks to the analysts. Normally I enjoy how RE culture is less corporate/PC and more laid back/good ole boys club, but there are some people that really would benefit from being forcefully filtered.

RE is chill when you have a bunch of old dudes who have been through all the bad shit. The broker stereotype is spot on.

Asian Software Engineer = People think are brilliant, but really they are excellent at installing Starcraft/Warcraft on their computers and play when their bosses aren't looking, and get their work done at the last minute. Oh, don't forget the pros are excellent at browsing Facebook (my bosses/directors).

No pain no game.

As an international child sex trafficker, everyone always thinks we are democrats, but in reality we are actually marxists, despite our strong ties to the Democratic party in the US. We also have ties to the Republicans as well, albeit weaker.
