Are you a VP at this point? They are not going to recruit for those roles 18 months out, and they're also not going to let someone of your seniority defer for much longer than a month or two.

I can't see a world in which you get right back to NYC UMM after only 2 years in PE and then 4 years in T2 industry roles, unless your prior firm is willing to take you back. Think you need to jump to an MM first to get back in the PE game. There's just way too many guys who have gone ASO -> senior ASO -> VP at a MM and are looking to upgrade for them to consider someone who has very dated UMM reps but less relevant experience since.

I can't speak for every team obviously, but going through an entire process with zero intent of starting on a reasonable timeline is very deceitful, and I think the general reaction would be "wtf dude" and "now we have to go re-run an entire process". You would almost certainly be blacklisted from future processes. Sunk cost is very low when you're hiring a mid-level guy who has just lied to you - much cheaper to go find someone else who is recruiting in good faith.

Most PE teams are not overstaffed enough to go an entire year with a VP on the hook. It's also not that hard to hire VPs (and your experience is not super compelling to begin with) so they will just go find another one.

It's not a common request for a reason - because it's not feasible. Just wait to recruit bud.
