How do I find funds to reach out to as a sophomore?

I attend a mid tier NESCAC (3.85 gpa, past experience in finance). My school does not have a lot of alums in the hedge fund or private equity world. I plan on moving to New York over the summer to work at a hedge fund or at a small private equity shop. How do I find small funds who can let me come work there? Is there a list of funds that may fit my description? I'm having trouble finding people at small funds. The ones who I'm speaking to are at funds that are just too big and have a formal process and not interested in sophomores. I want no compensation or anything. Just interesting deals and work experience and an increase in my learning. If anybody could help me out just with my process, I'd be thankful.
