Is this PE?

I am looking at a "special assets" group that largely acquires non-performing loans.

What would an Associate do in such a group?

Will it be largely database mining or actually dealing with companies, models, and working to turn them around?

Is this comparable to a special situations, or distressed debt group? That is, do they mostly acquire non-performing loans?

What comp ranges should be expected and what kind of exit ops exist? I feel like they would be limited as this is fairly niche.

Thanks
