MBB to PE/HF?

Hi guys,

Long story short, I had initially planned to go into IB after UG and eventually try to make the move to PE/HF. However, I did not manage to secure any BB IB offers, but ended up with an MBB offer (which I am very grateful for).

My question is, if my goal is an investments-type role down the line (I am more interested in HFs, but am aware that it is more feasible for a consultant to go to PE, though difficult as well), what steps would set me up best for my goal? Besides PE DD, are there any other types of projects I could try to get staffed on that may be helpful for recruiting?

Also on a side note - does a consultant's skillset lend itself well to groups like special sits? I'm relatively new to this area.

Also, if it makes a difference, I'm based in Asia.

Thanks!

i guarantee that McKinsey/Bain places better than OW for PE you might be more fit to actually do the job after a stint in finance consulting, but for the very rigid PE recruiting schedule, MB is all they really want from consulting

This is just an example of bad advice all together. Saying he needs to change to the likes of Oliver Wyman or so on to get FS exposure is unnecessary. Headhunters looking at consultants all prefer the MBB candidates in Europe. Bain Capital, HF have a track record of hiring consultants, with case interviews being a key component. If you look at their profile, most if not all from MBB.

Feel like giving him monkey shots was unnecessary since he just seems misinformed and not purposefully giving bad advice. I would echo that MB is the best for PE recruiting in the US, Europe and Asia. OP, if you scan through some large Asia funds (Baring, MBK, etc) you’ll see more MB for consulting profiles / that’s all I saw personally.
