Negotiation on job offer
Just got an offer from a PE fund for a pre-MBA associate position while recruiting off-cycle. The offer is incredible ($300k-$350k, coinvest, etc.) but some of my friends in PE are telling me to negotiate further (for either additional salary, a board seat once I close a deal, etc.). I don't have any other processes running or additional offers so my leverage is minimal.
I'd love to hear what peoples' thoughts are on whether I should negotiate here and if so, what exactly to negotiate for. Thank you all for the help!
Personally think board seats look well and good but don't mean anything. It could come with potential legal liabilities too. Maybe ask for a pathway to get carry, if possible?
My view on these types of things - unless you truly have leverage (another offer that is higher), you just take this offer. Prove yourself at your job, and 1 year later ask for more if you've done a good job. Maybe I'm too conservative, but asking for more before you've even started doesn't really set the right tone.
Yep, much more to lose than you have to gain.
That is a pretty attractive offer for pre-MBA.
This sounds like a megafund offer or at least upper MM. Negotitating with megafunds/upper MM firms at the pre-MBA level is idiotic.
That's an incredible offer. I really wouldn't try to negotiate there, but maybe you can ask what your path to carry and a board seat is.
If you want to negotiate, negotiate the signing bonus. They’re more likely to give on that than give you a higher salary than your peers.
Just my $.02
