On-cycle on 1-Year OPT?
Hi everyone,
Starting my analyst years now and I am an international on OPT. I just have a 1 year OPT and I was wondering what options I have to leave the sell-side. I am at a very strong group and I am sure I will get some offer but not sure if I will be allowed to recruit from HH given there is good chance I won't win my H1B next year.
What is everyone experience with recruiting on 1 year OPT? did I screw myself by not going to the Buyside out of school
Yeah, I think this puts you in a tough position to recruit. You should look into MFs with offices in London. I am not too familiar with UK immigration laws but my understanding is that it'd be relatively easy to get a visa with an offer in-hand (vs. depending on the H1B lottery here in the US). With that said, if you are selected in the H1B lottery recruiting in the US will not be a problem.
FWIW I don't think you screwed yourself by not going directly into the buyside. I think you screwed yourself by not doing a STEM major (which, as I am sure you know, would have given you 3 years of OPT).
so you think I will get interviews to MF with also London offices?
I know, I tried to switch but my school is dumb af
Also international. From what I’ve heard, without H1B, HHs would not recommend you to PE firms at all. With 1yr OPT, it’s possible that you have to transfer to London or Hong Kong even during your 2yrs of banking not to mention PE after 2yrs (though best of luck in the H1B lottery). It’s simply not worth it for PE firms to hire u here and transfer u to London. With that said in case u didn’t get the H1B, there are a lot of opportunities in London, and I think you can somehow transfer back to the states or you can do an mba but remember do one with a STEM option.
I'm on STEM OPT and just joined an MF in NYC after 2 years of banking. Likely moving to London office next year (have not gotten H1B yet). Had superdays with multiple funds during on-cycle.
If you can share, what firms would hire you/transfer you to London?
has anyone mentioned you they will transfer you if you don't win the lottery?
hi! i will be interning at a top-tier bb this summer, and am an international student with 1 yr opt as well. I'm wondering if the fact that I only have 1 yr opt will reduce the chance of getting a return offer. do you think this is an issue? would appreciate any insights from you since you've gone through the process too. thanks!
no, your odds of a return are not affected
