PE Internship - Help needed to get FT

Hi guys,

I am an MSc Finance student and currently trying to get into MM PE. I did internships in IB, Corp. Dev., worked as a consultant (accounting advisory) for one year and did other internships during my bachelor.
As you can imagine, it is very tough to get directly into PE. I have now an offer for a 2-month internship with the possibility to get a FT offer at a MM PE. During my interview process with other PE´s I notices, that I am very strong with the financial part of the work such as valuation, accounting etc. and researching financials (like really good! There is nearly nothing I cannot find).

But my weakness in the "strategic component" of the work. I understand all management frameworks and know how to use them. But for example, if I have to find the top 10 competitors of a mid-cap firm, I would have no clue how to do this. Also, how to evaluate markets (size, growth etc.) ?! I know all the frameworks, but sometimes I lack “think outside the box” mentality. Has somebody any tips on how to improve and train techniques/structures which are helpful? Thanks in advance
