PE networking London

Hey guys,

I was wondering whether it was worth to try to network with PE professionals ahead of recruiting in London?

I am asking as I heard that processes were quite locked by HHs but surely being recommended by someone at the fund must be quite helpful?

Thanks in advance!

Networking with PE professionals ahead of recruiting in London can indeed be beneficial, despite the significant role that headhunters (HHs) play in the recruitment process. While it's true that most of the recruiting happens exclusively via HHs, especially for roles in small teams where the recruitment needs are very specific, networking should not be overlooked.

Here's why networking can still be valuable:

  1. Insight and Advice: Networking with PE professionals can provide you with invaluable insights into the firm's culture, investment strategy, and what they look for in candidates. This information can be crucial in tailoring your application and interview responses.

  2. Visibility: Being recommended by someone within the fund can increase your visibility to the hiring team. Although headhunters play a crucial role in filtering candidates, a recommendation from a current employee can set you apart and potentially fast-track your application.

  3. Understanding the Landscape: Networking can help you understand the broader PE landscape in London, including the nuances of different funds, their focus areas, and potential upcoming opportunities that may not be widely advertised.

  4. Long-term Relationships: Building relationships with PE professionals can benefit you beyond the immediate recruiting cycle. The PE industry values long-term relationships, and the connections you make now could open doors for you in the future.

  5. Direct Opportunities: While less common, there are instances where networking directly leads to opportunities, especially with smaller funds or in specific situations where a fund is looking to hire quickly and values the endorsement of their current employees.

In summary, while headhunters are key players in the London PE recruiting process, networking with PE professionals can still play a crucial role in your job search strategy. It's about complementing the formal recruitment process with personal connections and insights that can give you an edge.
