PE Recruiting Help!!!!
Hey Everyone,
Heres the story I am interning at a Private Equity firm for the fall semester of my MBA program. The firm I am interning for does not convert interns to analyst as they try to hire people who have worked in the industry a few years. My MBA program will end in 2019 and I was wondering if anyone has input on when/if I should reach out to recruiters regarding converting to a full time. Not sure if that is taboo or if they reach out to me. Any insight is helpful.
Thanks,
Loyal Monkey

Hey @n95smiles, first- congrats on the internship! Second- yes, you need to reach out to recruiters and directly to the PE firms you're interested in immediately. It is totally normal for the outreach to come from you- in fact my experience is it gives recruiters a data point about your drive/passion/initiative.
A couple thoughts (all my $0.02, happy to be contradicted if others feel strongly but this is what I've seen work well)-
1) If there is ANY chance you could get (and are interested in) a return offer to the firm you are currently interning with, you need to be delicate. If they are evaluating you for a full-time seat they will stop doing so the instant they find you are doing outbound networking. Still do it, but don't let them know.
2) You need to know why they won't be offering you a fulltime role, it is the first question you will get from recruiters and other firms you reach out to. "So how's it going at xyz firm? Are they inviting you back?" If they are not, you need to be crystal clear that the reason is that there was never a fulltime seat at that firm, NOT that you in some way fell short. I can't highlight enough how important this is.
3) Post MBA recruting is rolling now for the big guys that run a formal process. Call and email every headhunter (check the excellent threads on this site with list of headhunters and details for how to frame those conversations).
4) Post MBA recruiting for middle market firms and definitely for lower MM still goes through headhunters, but they start their process much more reactively (think December-May) and so you have a golden opportunity right now to circumvent the broader process and get in touch directly with firms you're targeting. Find someone on the firm's website you have something in common with, shoot them an email with a one sentence background on you, one sentence expressing genuine adminiration/interest in their firm, and asking for a few minutes to connect. Get on the phone, be prepared to give your background and elevator pitch, and mostly ask questions about them and their firm. End with expressing grenuine interest and ask if you can contiue to stay in touch over the school year. All you're trying to do is get to know them and be on their radar once they think about recruiting.
Execute on this and you'll have a great shot to land somewhere you're excited about. As far as timing, don't rush your preparation (you need to be ready for these conversations), but start as soon as you feel comfortable. I know 2nd yr MBAs who started this the second their summer internship ended in August and they're getting interviews now.
