PE / VC leads in Toronto / Canada?
Looking for a job in the space - surprise surprise! Haha. But seriously, planning to move to Toronto for personal reasons and want to recruit directly. Don't think the headhunters will be of help.
I know it's a small market, a tough market, etc etc so please don't discourage me. I'm just looking for a list of PE firms that I can reach out to directly.
Thanks guys!
What's your background?
Banking (loved it) --> public equities (didn't like it) --> Ivy MBA (loved it) --> finance/ops at a couple VC-backed companies (meh). Don't laugh, haha! Never had the chance to get a full-time PE role, but every time I was somehow involved in a private deal somewhere, I loved it. I like the process and people element of it.
whitehorse liquidity partners - everybody who is an anybody has to recruit and work there
🤣
🤡
Claiming that Whitehorse is PE is an insult to PE.
He is clearly joking. Everyone knows WH is a joke.
A bit more familiar with firms in Montréal, but on top of my head you have BDC, Inovia, OTTP. Also most big Canadian banks seem to be increasing their PE/VC teams, so it’s maybe something you could look at.
Could you elaborate on how banks have their own PE teams? PE teams within the Asset Management arms or the bank's principal investment team?
Honestly idk, but I guess in their AM arm.
Definitely not comprehensive, but this is kind of the lay of the PE land, in no particular order below.
Megafunds: Onex (& Oncap), Altas Partners, Brookfield
Pensions: CPPIB, OMERS, Teachers, HOOPP, AIMCO, BCI
MM: Birch Hill, Torquest, Clairvest, Imperial Capital, Fengate, Peloton Capital
VC / GE: Georgian, Inovia, Information Venture Partners, BDC Capital, CBGF, MARS, Round 13 (I'm much less familiar of the VC space)
I'm definitely missing some players, but these are the reputable and more popular firms that come to mind.
Thank you! The big ones feel out of reach considering I'm not coming from a traditional track. I'll look into the MM ones. Thanks again!
Great list!
I would add Novacap / Sagard on MM.
For VC, Portage / Diagram are good options too.
Would recommend against Sagard/Portage for anyone reading - heard from former colleagues that work culture is terrible and stems from poor leadership (not surprising as Power Corp is basically a family run corp by a Quebec billionaire).
Novacap as well in the MM bucket
LMM: Ironbridge, Fulcrum, Yellowpoint
I'd avoid the "VC" in Canada at all costs. Really small funds that are way too risk averse to be considered true VC. Unfortunately the startup ecosystem in Canada is just no where near robust enough yet. Most are just incubators in disguise or groups that get government grants for ESG/DEI bullshit.
Portage / iNovia / Georgian are solid shops
Direct msg me. With a Toronto-based VC firm.
any insight on associate comp at any of the VC shops mentioned?
