RE Dev -> Infra PE Possible?

Hi All,

Some background on me: 2 years post-grad and have been working in RE development for a brand name shop.  Solid gig but don't see myself in this space long term. As I've been doing some career soul searching - I keep find myself drawn towards the renewables/infra side of the real assets space.

While I think my background relates to the project finance side of things, I have no experience with energy whatsoever.

Do you think I could reasonably make this transition or would a masters probably be needed? Or would I have to try and go the IB > PE route?

Would appreciate any advice or anecdotes!

Thanks.

You will almost certainly need to do IB first. Alternatively, you could also try going to a large renewables developer, but even then will still probably find Infra PE opportunities unlikely without IB experience. I wouldn't suggest doing an MBA and going into it with the expectation of being able to break into Infra PE without doing either of the above first. There may be some edge cases--maybe something like CIM Group could be possible given your RE background--but most Infra funds won't have interest without a more traditional IB background.
