Reaching out to PE Co Founder

One of my best friends close family friend, Co Founded a PE fund that manages around $2-8 Billion. He is based in the New York but he comes to Australia for holiday every now and again. My friend tells me he is a good guy and him and I would get along well. I also get along very well with my friend's parents, they think very highly of me.

I'm starting university this year in Australia and I'm becoming more interested in PE and researching more. I would be willing to pay for my own flights and accommodation to work with his firm for however long for free. I think the cost of going to the US would be well worth it for the experience gained. How should I go about approaching him initially?
