Recruiting timeline?

When does the recruiting for bigger PE shops (TPG, Bain Cap, KKR all the way down to like Hellman & Friedman etc) get started. Is it approximately June for the following year? Can anyone give insight? Does one get in contact with these places through exec recruiters or apply directly? Thanks for all your help.
