Working for a Major Institutional Investor

Hi all,

What are the roles of a PE investment analyst working for a major institutional investor, i.e. CalPERS, APFC, IPERS, etc.? What type of quantitative analysis would it involve and would this be an enjoyable experience for an individual to learn about the in's and out's of the PE asset class? I've always wondered what it is like to work on this side of investment management, and if anyone could provide some insight on it, that would be great, thanks!

I think a PE analyst role at a firm like this would be similar to a fund of funds analyst role. These large state investment funds are typically not running an internal PE fund, but rather have numerous investments in external PE funds. As an analyst, this would limit the quantitiative scope of your job. You would probably be focusing more on asset allocation, due diligence, attending meetings with PE fund managers pitching their firm, etc.
