How important is LinkedIn?
I realized how outdated my profile is and am curious what your opinion is on LinkedIn and its significance towards networking as a whole, but specifically within CRE. It seems that some people have a much more serious outlook on its essentiality, especially those my age (20s), so I'm wondering how much time, effort, and importance you believe LinkedIn holds within today's world of finance.
Debating on deactivating mine for a little since I have secured a job and value privacy greatly.
I've always hated it and currently don't have one as I'm now self-directed, but I'd say it's a check mark if you have a professional updated page, and a big negative to not have one or a poor one. Just get it to look clean
Can't speak to CRE. But, I would say it is especially helpful for networking and a bit less helpful for the inbound job opportunities. That being said, your page should be in good shape, updated, etc. Otherwise, it doesn't have a whole lot of value at least in my experience
LOL. Update the basic information in your profile and include a professional photo, then be done with it. I agree that a lot of people, especially the ever so tender young ones, tend to write their life story on LinkedIn as if anyone gives a shit that they got their first internship and are incredibly grateful to their sophomore econ professor, their mom, etc. No one cares and forcing other people to read that drivel makes you seem like a self-absorbed brat with no humility who thinks the real world is going to be a cushiony pre-determined extension of your college safe space.... That said, if you can build your network around people you look up to, LinkedIn can be a valuable source of information and connection. Do not forget that recruiters often use LinkedIn to find talent. Most messages from recruiters you can ignore, but sometimes you can land a job via a LinkedIn source. Lastly, just think about appearances. If you aren't on LinkedIn someone may think you are anti-social or something, even though that is not the case, simply because it has become such a mainstream obsession. But I digress: keep it somewhat current then leave it alone until you need a new job.
Who is "forcing" you or anyone else to read someone's LinkedIn?
I agree it's unnecessary, but live and let live. Some college senior posting about their new internship as if they won a Nobel Peace Prize may make me cringe, but it's not hurting me or anyone else. I'll laugh at it if it's over the top, but I'm not holding that against someone, any more than I would hold it against someone who linked to being on a 30 Under 30 or something; someone just starting their career doesn't have as much to be proud of

Linkedin is the first place recruiters will look for you and first impressions count. I agree it is not the holy grail to find a role but it is important so invest some time in getting it right and coherent. Going through this process can also help you with refreshing what your story is and how you deliver it at interview when you get to that stage. Anyone who thinks it is useless will not be on the radar for headhunts though I agree again that the common theme is to keep it strictly business!
I "background check" people on linkedin all the time, this is a very common practice. Also, having an up to date linkedin profile is more important than a resume if you ever want to be "headhunted". Frankly, just map your resume to linkedin, can expound more as no page limitation issues, and you are fine. If you were job searching, then having more complete items and summaries are critical, if not, basics on relevant work history, education, certifications, etc. is all you need along with a professional headshot. Really no good excuse not to have, this is part of professional life now.
FWIW I don’t have a LinkedIn profile, albeit for a particular reason. A lot of my family members work or have worked in the intelligence community and have operated all over the world. I have been asked not to have too much info out on the internet and for that reason I don’t have a profile. I have had great jobs at big companies you’ve definitely heard of as well as small local shops that I have landed through organic networking and nobody has ever brought it up, though I have obviously never been reached out to by a headhunter.
It's one of those things that you have to have; but don't necessarily have to use.
My current role in acquisitions was from a linkedin recruiter. Keep it up to date and you’ll see benefits.
LinkedIn is one of those things that's kind of important to have but you never actually have to do anything with it.
I wouldn't deactivate it, but if you check it once a year you'll also be fine. I use it about once a week though as redever said to "background check" people.
