How limiting is age? - RE
Hi guys I’m 23 (older in year group) taking a year before pursuing a MSc in real estate finance (24 on start). I have two internships under the belt, but I need to take a year to clear my head after undergrad and put some money in my pocket for an MSc.
I’ll be 24 turning 25 when I graduate from my MSc - is this too old (UK) to break in? End goal is REPE. It’s something that has been on my mind lately and if the deferral of my course was the right move?
Thanks
I’m a 36 year old associate at a bank being paid 200k all in. Nobody knows how old I am, I am lucky I look young.
Think you are good as long as you are coachable.
.
Curious what you did before this?
Dropped out, did sales, went back to school. Worked at a MM brokerage in debt, pivoted to buy side. Pivoted to debt for a sr associate title, the. Pivoted to 1/3 CRE2/3 other finance so took a title drop, but made more money
I sure hope 26 isnt too old as that is the age I will be when I graduate from my MSRE program. Joking honestly as I really do not think thats too old at all.
The average age in my analyst class was 24 if I’m correct, so you are definitely fine. Might just sometimes be a bit harder to keep up with the 21 year olds after some nights out but other than that there shouldn’t be any problems ;)
Interestingly, the younger analysts that I work with are wrecked the next day when they let loose. Think with age you learn to avoid the peaks and valleys.
No. Just live your life. There is never an age where you’re too old
It's a barrier if you make it one
Not too late at all, have seen 30+ year old analysts.
Real estate is the only industry that you get better with, with age
Don’t overthink these things. Just focus on the mission. I’m 24 now and just got laid off and about to go from principal side (only worked at the shop for 3 months) to capital markets side once an opportunity transpires. At my first job there were multiple analysts that were 25-28 when I got there. Everyone moves at their own pace just focus on your path.
Most people don’t care and if they do who cares haha
I know very little about the UK but in the US, older is better in real estate. Very few firms that I know of are hiring kids right out of undergrad.
Not to mention the phenomena of once you have a ring on your finger and some grey in your hair, people suddenly start listening to what you say and doing things you tell them to do
25 is not old, [re2hobo_speedrunner]
As I've gotten more senior and interact with more property owners directly, it feels like half of them and their lawyers are like 75 years old.
My guy, it is never too late. I took 5 years to finish undergrad and spent an extra year after pivoting over to Development. I’m a few months into age 24 and I’m planning to go back to school for an MRED. You’re good.
There are 25YR olds out there right now that are in other random non RE roles that won’t get into real estate until their 30’s and will make a shitload.
I admire your drive to have a successful career in this industry, but you and other young career individuals need to stop thinking the path is so black and white.
Do whatever you need to do dude. If you really want to do something in RE you’ll be able to figure it out. It’s not like you’re trying to get a job at Bridgewater.
