How to network for future move?

Enjoying my job ~1yr in, but hoping to move to a larger city (LA, SF, NY) in 2023 to experience a new place/ different lifestyle. For context, I’m at a mid-sized developer/owner (5bn aum) in a secondary market working in AM.

I know it’s a tough time for CRE in general and 2023 might be an even worse time to move, but was curious how folks networked into markets they might not have a foothold in? I don’t have a target undergrad or xxl company name on my resume, so I’m curious how to get my foot in the door, ideally in REPE.

Cold emails? Linkedin? Undergrad career center? Back in undergrad I would cold-message folks on LinkedIn asking if they were free for a “coffee chat” to learn more about their work, but not sure if that’s as socially accepted for a graduate who's already working? Don’t really have a lot of friends/ family connections into those markets unfortunately so I figure I’ll have to bootstrap it through the internet and was hoping people might have some tips and tricks. Not in a hurry, but I figured it would be best to start networking earlier than later to have people to reach out to should applications open up.
