Lack of grade inflation internationally
Hi,
I noticed that many people on LinkedIn proudly post GPAs between 3.8-4.0.
Now for reference in my uni in Germany we had 400 students and our grades looked dramatically worse:
- 4.0 = 0 Students
- 3.9 = 2 Students
- 3.8 = 3 Students
- ...
- 3,0 = <50%
Now I dont believe we are inherently more stupid but just that our uni courses are harder. If you were in my position what would you do? Writing a GPA of <3.5 seems really bad should i instead use my ranking compared to the cohort? If so what class ranking would also give negative signals? Class ranking >top 10% or >30%. Are there any hard cut-offs? Should I instead include my GMAT of 710, I feel like most graduate students have this anyway, so I dont think this differentiates me much either.
Thanks
Ah, the classic conundrum of international grade translation – it's like trying to compare apples to oranges, isn't it? Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you could consider doing:
Contextualize Your GPA: If you're applying to positions or schools in the U.S., it's important to provide context for your GPA. You could include a brief explanation in your resume or cover letter that your university grades on a much stricter scale than U.S. institutions.
Class Rank: Using your class rank can be a great way to show how you stack up against your peers, especially if you're in the top tier. If you're above the 50% mark, it's generally seen as positive, but the higher, the better. Top 10% is impressive, but even top 30% can be seen favorably depending on the competitiveness of your university.
Highlight Your GMAT Score: A 710 is a solid score and while it may not be a unique differentiator, it's still a strong point in your favor. It can help offset concerns about your GPA, especially since it's a standardized test that provides a common ground for comparison.
Emphasize Other Strengths: If your GPA isn't a highlight, shift the focus to other areas such as relevant work experience, leadership roles, extracurricular activities, or any unique skills or achievements.
Research the Norms: Some industries or firms may have GPA cut-offs, but these can vary widely. It's worth doing some digging on forums like WSO to see if there are specific thresholds for the roles or companies you're interested in.
Remember, your GPA is just one part of your profile. Make sure to present a well-rounded picture of your capabilities and achievements. Swing from those vines with confidence, and don't let a number define your potential!
