Advice for Transfer to Ivey HBA

Hello!

I'm a Grade 12 student going to Ryerson University's Business Management program. I was rejected from Ivey AEO, Queens, Rotman, Schulich and Laurier, so I had no other choice for business school, unfortunately. But my goal has always been to get into finance, specifically investment banking, and I am determined to try my best and transfer into Ivey in my third year. I am in the process of finding out about leadership opportunities at Ryerson and I understand my average needs to be as high as possible in my first and second years in order to be competitive. Do you have any suggestions or goals I should aim for in order to give my best shot when applying in my second year?

Thank you so much!

Sorry to be that guy bro but if you were rejected from all those schools, the chances of you getting a transfer to Ivey in 2nd year is going to be slim. There are two types of transfers to Ivey, the first are internal transfers who studied at Western University and the other are students who studied at at a different University. The latter is broken up into whether that student studied business or anything else (engineering/science etc).

The Ivey transfer process will be highly competitive for you because of two reasons (1) Ivey limits the number of external transfers from the get go (they give preference to people already studying at Western) (2) They further limit external transfers who are applying from another business program. You can usually count on your hands the number of external transfers to Ivey who previously studied at a different business school.

If I were you, I'd do my best to swing as close to a 4.0 GPA as possible and try to get some good internships along the way while at Ryerson. Just be cognizant of the fact that you might still get rejected when you apply to Ivey. Do your best at Ryerson and if you're one of the best students there, you should still be able to get a Bay Street offer. Good luck

If you're really serious about transferring, you're going to have to really step up your school work from what you were doing in high school. Transfers need about an 85+ (the higher the better obviously), 3 solid extra curriculars where you're actively leading and creating a change in these activities. Also, don't underestimate the power of the written essays. Make sure to spend a ton of time on them to highlight the impact you had on your activities - Ivey students would be great people to have look at them to proofread

As some of the other posters said, potentially look into transferring into other programs after 1 year.

It's also a lot easier to get into Ivey from Western than as a transfer, so if you're dead set on Ivey and have a BMOS offer, then take that. If not, look into transferring into Western after 1 year.

Also, if you end up staying in Ryerson, you're going to need very strong work experience to set yourself apart. May be a good idea to have a part time search fund internship (essentially a micro cap PE fund) during the school year. Also take advantage of the fact that you're in Toronto for networking in the future.

Hey, I’m a freshman here at sauder (ubc), was j wondering if you could shed some more light on how to find and recruit for part time search fund roles during the school year? Does it require strong networking like other traditional finance roles or can you get by with cold emailing? Also is previous finance experience/finance club leadership a strict necessity for the applications? I understand that there might be a lower number of search funds/micro caps here in Vancouver than in a place like Toronto or Montreal. Thanks!
