CMU vs UVA vs Stern vs UCLA for undergrad
Hi,
I'm a college senior and just got accepted to the above schools. I'm having a hard time making a decision and hope to get some help from WSO. I really want to do consulting (hopefully MBB), I'm also open to finance jobs in tech companies. I'm pretty sure I don't want to do banking/accounting. Also, I'm international and a girl if that makes a difference.
I got into all the schools for Econ major. Now I'm trying to decide between UCLA and CMU. I crossed out Stern because I don't want to do banking, but please correct me if I'm wrong. As for UVA, I crossed it out at first because it is not as prestigious as the others internationally, but I also saw many great comments about UVA on WSO so I'm not sure again.
CMU: I got in their Science and Humanities Scholar Program, so I'll be able to declare majors in both colleges or switch schools fairly easily. Econ is under both Tepper and the college of humanities. I think the school has great job placement especially on the tech field. I'm pretty open to tech, I'm thinking about picking up a stem minor or switch to their information system major if I go there.
UCLA: I think UCLA might place better than CMU in consulting. I might have more opportunities there because it's LA? But it's a lot bigger and much more competition at the same time. Also, LA should definitely beat Pittsburgh in terms of social life. Social life is not my top priority. I can get very nerdy sometimes and also get social easily, but it would nice to enjoy life with sunshine.
I''m also on the Waitlist for WashU and might consider it if I get off the waitlist. I'm open to any suggestions/corrections! Thanks in advance!
UVA hands down
Can I ask why?
UCLA hands down. forget washu unless it's for money
That's when everything else isnt too different though, but it's a terrible assumption FYI
Thanks! Which assumption are you referring to? I realized I made a lot assumptions...lol
if you look at it with more dimensions, like size, public/private, class size avg., location-big/small metro vs. middle of nowhere, there are many metrics that you should tailor to your liking a bit more.
I'd say UCLA and UVA are similar, WashU and CMU look alike a bit, but again, a few extra things for you to make sure you pick it right, more than recruiting historys
Personally I would go for UCLA or UVA. Fun state schools with great academics and placement. CMU just sounds like a pit of misery.
UCLA and UVA are both solid choices. Good academics, fun schools / sports and great network. I'd visit both and get a feel. Do you prefer a major city like LA or a small college town like Charlottesville? Another thing to consider is where you want to work after graduation. UCLA's network on the West Coast is huge, and same thing for UVA on the East Coast.
Would avoid CMU. Great school, but it's in Pittsburgh and mostly known for computer science/engineering. Don't go to Stern... being an undergrad in NYC is a terrible experience, the student body not fun and the campus sucks.
UCLA or UVA. UVA is a bit more prestigious (higher ranked at the undergrad level and higher ranked across graduate programs) but they're fairly close. I'd echo what the other poster said and choose mostly on where you want to live (LA vs charlottesville) and if you want to end up on the west coast or east coast post school
CMU is a great school, but not very fun. The people are prett anti social from friends who I've talked to who went there. No Greek life or anything If you're into that. UVA/UCLA will hands down be way more fun/have hotter girls/better parties/more IM sports while still having great exit ops if you keep the GPA high and network
UCLA out of those that you mentioned, and then I would go UDub if you get in, especially if you have your sights on international.
As for UCLA: Solid business finance and economics alumni and networking. Anderson is top notch on the west coast, nationally, and internationally. Outside of that, however, the campus and most of the people there are cancer. Stay away from the non-serious people.
Be warned that you are also in the deep west side, which is not an accurate representation of LA as a whole, and I have known people who burned out getting too involved in the "scene" out there. Like USC, there are a bunch of entitled little shits you are innevitably going to meet, especially if you go Greek life (if you are determined you will go business organization rather than a social).
Network hard with the people within Anderson, and because you will be crossing paths with USC people at some point, it doesn't hurt to try to build a small network there through common interests etc.
I have a distaste for the west side, however, particularly westwood, beverly hills, and santa monica, so I am biased.
