Georgetown SFS vs NYU Stern (BPE)

Dear WSO,

I know this topic (GU vs Ross vs NYU vs UVA vs other non-ivy target, etc) has been litigated and discussed to its death, but I was wondering if Georgetown SFS changed the recruiting landscape for IB and Finance. Overall, from what I understand, GU will be a better college environment and help me place in other areas like consulting but Stern will be marginally better for IB. As a result, I had a few questions:

  1. Would being GU SFS disadvantage me in recruiting vs Stern? The fit and pay is honestly similar and heart is 70% set on IB/some sort of finance > consulting.

  2. For Stern, does anyone have experience with BPE and again would any of the study abroad programs affect my recruiting? If I go to Stern, should I switch out to something more trad?

Thank you!

There's no advantage/disadvantage in terms of recruiting imo. BPE kids can take the same finance classes as everyone else. If anything, the BPE people I knew seemed to enjoy their college experience more than the other typical finance hardos and got some cool/unique experiences under their belt, all while placing at the firms they wanted to.

For Georgetown, the school really doesn't matter in recruiting. The Georgetown network is still the same. That being said, if you want IB you need to make sure you can nail technicals, which means you either have to take business classes, self-study accounting/finance, or do one of those joint SFS/MSB degree programs (I don't remember what those are called but I know they exist).

Also, if you're gonna do NYC banking after college, you might as well spend 4 years in DC, since you'll be in NYC for a while. I went to Georgetown and I'm so glad I got to explore DC for 4 years before coming to the big apple!

I’m distracted by your use of “litigate” here. Is there a definition for it outside of legal contest?

Stern for recruiting. Also, if you meet the right ppl at nyu, you can run around the city and do things most ppl never get to experience in their life

stern is good for recruiting, but I will have to let you know that it is uber competitive there. For good options, you have to get into Finance Society which is a monster just to get in(recruiting is another monster you have to battle).

My brother went to Gtown and ended up at a Top Group (GS TMT, EVR M&A, etc.) and it was much easier compared to my experience recruiting( I went to a public target).

I would personally go Gtown. The college experience is still important, and I think arguably on a per capita basis it is much more easier than going to Stern where 95% of the population is gunning for IB.
