Confused Farmer With an S&T Internship and Questions
I only have two brain cells, so I didn't look at exit opportunities from S&T before I applied. After reading around (a lot) it seems to me that the IBD is the ideal launchpad to go to the buy-side (which I want to do).
I'm an S&T intern at RBC in London who wants to go to buy-side and wants to increase exit opps, so I'm considering trying to go FT or SA for IBD hopefully at a BB, but maybe MM, in NYC. Is this the best course of action? Which one would position me best to get me to the buy-side in a HF research analyst/ trading role or PE?
(A visa is required in London but not in NYC.)
Thanks for any advice in advance.
Is there a question here?
I guess what should he do next?
Hey, yeah, that’s it. I’ve updated the question cause I didn’t actually write a question. Basically it’s what I should do next as an S&T intern to best position myself for going to the buy-side in a research/trading role at a HF or in PE? (Preferably in NYC.)
Learn to hedge your commodity exposure, go back to the farm, and make money hand over fist. Honestly I've known some very very wealthy farmers and they all have one thing in common: they actively trade (i.e., hedge) their exposures and they hedge very far out. Some of them have worked at ABCD companies before and learned the trade from that but others are just very adapt businessmen.
First off, congratulations - you've already accomplished more than most will with the exciting caveat that you're only at the beginning of your career. Take it for what it's worth, but that was too long to not have a question. Background and context is always appreciated when giving advice, but long dissertations will not do you a service during your internship.
Ha, yeah sorry about that. I’ve fixed the question and made it more clear. Essentially what I’m asking is to give me the most exit opps to get to a L/S HF or PE as a trader/research analyst, is it a good idea to try to move to IBD at a BB (or MM) in NYC and try to get an internship or FT there or is S&T in London fine if is get a full time role and then move? The ultimate goal is buy side in NYC. (A visa is required in London but not NYC.)
A technicality, but there won't be a PE role which requires a trader / research analyst - at least not in the context you are thinking of it from (please to others reading, don't try and assert that certain PE shops have public equity arms so I'm wrong).
It is a good idea to try and move to NYC if that is your dream location but if you are focused on getting a buyside role in public markets as you alluded to, then either stick with S&T or more ideally pivot into an equity research role. Banking could get you there as well but it is a path less trodden on for what you're looking to do.
Been reading all the comments, if the process to transfer proves too hard, you could get an MBA in the US and then break in that way. Maybe you could do London buy-side and then go to NYC buy-side. For HF, I've always heard that S&T can exit into the space so I bet you could break-in to London HF.
Honestly unless you want to go to MBA route and go for H1B lottery, I would strongly advise against going to US as it is very tough in visa situations unless you are a green card holder / citizen. Not only breaking in is tough but transferring to the buy-side, you must need an H1B (at least that's what I heard).
Just know that it is an uphill battle in which not all factors are in your control at all.
Edit: I realized you said you don't need visa to work in the US. Then just do an internal transfer after a year and then start recruiting for buy-side in NYC
