If I start my career at an options MM (akuna, optiver, etc.) will I have the opportunity to trade spec at a hedgefund? I would like to trade vol but I want a spec book instead of a MM book.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's certainly possible to transition from options market making (MM) to speculative trading at a hedge fund. However, it's important to note that the skills and experiences you gain in options MM may not directly translate to speculative trading.
In options MM, you're primarily focused on providing liquidity, managing risk, and profiting from the bid-ask spread. On the other hand, speculative trading involves taking on risk with the expectation of making a profit from market movements.
That being said, the quantitative and risk management skills you develop as an options MM can be valuable in a speculative trading role. Additionally, having a strong understanding of options and volatility can also be beneficial if you're interested in trading vol at a hedge fund.
Remember, every hedge fund has its own unique strategy and approach to trading, so it's important to do your research and network with professionals in the industry to understand what skills and experiences they value most.
