advice needed - fucked over grad

Hi guys,

just need some advice... I am/was part of a rotation programme at a financial services firm. I was advised that I would transfer over to a front office position (think research) after some time in my current role. Unfortunately, things have been quite rough and the transferral had been cancelled. I am now stuck in a quasi relationship management role/operations role, whereby I don't have discernible or marketable skills. I have kept in touch with the front office team which I wanted to transfer too and occassionally still work with them..

its been close to a year now and I have no word of a possible transfer or if that particular team is getting head count (It seems they aren't). I am quite worried and am unable to know what do next.

a) should i return and do a masters degree in finance and attempt to start over fresh from the bottom? (masters finance from a big european university/asia pac uni)
b) I am really unhappy and I am trying desperately to get out but I am in that uneviable position of being a couple of years out of undergrad and still doing piss ant work.. so I am not eligible for graduate programs and lack the necessary skills/exp to move on to more 'serious' work.
c) I have spoken to various HR people and they seem unwilling to help and unsympathetic. It seems like they're treating me like an entry position worker, have offered little in the way of training and am expected to work my way up. I am not entirely adverse to this, its more about a question of time and if I can bang out progression using any other options.

any advice is needed/avenues I can pursue.

To all those reading: rotational grad programmes are a huge risk, and I strongly advise people don't go through with them.. because you will be at the mercy of the business despite what your agreement was with your employer.

You could always study for the CFA. Get your level 1 by the year and see if that will help your lateral movement in firm. It certainly won't hurt your options moving forward and would be way more affordable then an MBA. Or take your experience to a similar firm that may offer better opportunities.

Let me explain to you how this works: you see, the corporations finance Team America, and then Team America goes out...and the corporations sit there in their...in their corporation buildings, and...and see, they're all corporation-y...and they make money

If I were you unless you are 100% ready and willing to jump back into school I would hold off (it doesn't sound like you are totaly sure what you would go back for and what the plan would be moving forward). It has only been one year, keep persuing your CFA and put fingers out for other opportuinites. You have a few things going for you, steady income, some experience, and lvl 1, don't panic just take your time and evaluate all your options before you pull the trigger on anything. If you are willing to relocate you will deffinatly be able to find a position elsewhere (possibly even in corporate finance). It sounds like you have only been there a year so in all reality it may seem like an eternity but it is a relativly short stint, you may also not have enough work expereince to get into a top teir MS program. I'd use the experience you have and try to land a job at another firm that gives you more opportunity.

you are not alone, i know of friends that are in the same boat as you

most fresh grads out of college find temp jobs through recruiting firms with the promise of full time down the road. its been close to a year now and they are stuck there with no possible transfer. no matter how hard you network and work overtime, in the end it comes down to getting headcount approval. some are even at BB well known firms but BO positions.

i would hold offf on CFA or MBA until you figure out what you want to do.

Thanks for the opinions guys.

But I havent been here 1 year, I've been here close to 2 years. Would this still impact the advice you guys have to offer?

There is also no guarantee that if a position were to open up, I would get it. Id like to think i am somewhat of a front runner but I never know with this place.

I've been looking pretty hard.. but I dont even know where to start. I look on jobwebsites mostly but this have yielded nil so far. Do I approach recruiters? I have some front office based experience and I feel like I can spin my BO responsibilities.
