AMEX Analyst Recruiting (Full-time)
Hi I'm a senior at non-target school for American Express hoping to land a position in their financial analyst program. I applied for their internship this past summer in the fall shortly after it was posted and was unsuccessful. Have a 3.6 GPA, Finance/Accounting major, Econ minor and have had five financial services internships throughout my college career all but one were paid. Interned with a Big Four this summer in audit (received full time offer) which really isn't my cup of tea. I've networked extensively with alumni from my university at Amex and while they have all been willing to talk to me they don't really have a way to pass me along to the recruiters since Amex has a decentralized recruiting process.
Amex is easily my number one employer out of school and I'm really trying to give it my best shot. I've considered traveling to attend info sessions at target schools or career fairs to gain an introduction to a recruiter. My understanding is they pull extensively from their summer internship but will begin hiring in November/December. Can anyone share thoughts or advice? Thank you very much.
Bump. Anyone have any advice?
Much Appreciated.
Definitely use your connections as much as you can. Get in touch with them, schedule coffee, ask about the full-time program... anything to make them thing they'd enjoy working with you and that you're a hard worker.
Internships are what gets me my interviews at the F500 companies, so definitely focus on those. Especially if you worked with big names like the big 4.
Forget about being at a non-target, work hard and show them you want this and you'll get it. Make your ambitions and drive blatently obvious.
Remember, you have nothing to lose but everything to gain. So, don't be scared to do something you're not comfortable with.
Just make as much contacts as you can there. Informational interviews, AMEX recruiting events, Alum, etc.. Take all those buzz words that they want (look at their job description) and litter your resume with them.
But I have to say, even if Big 4 Audit isn't your cup of tea, it's your best bet to a solid corporate finance job (at AMEX or anywhere else) in 2 years time. FP&A groups are littered with former Big 4 employees, and they usually can expect (with 2 years Big 4 experience) 70-80k.
To be honest dude, I'd take Big 4 and "suck it up" for a couple years, then bounce.
Thanks for the post. I'll try and get back in touch with my contacts and keep looking for events. With that said, I'd be ok doing a few years at Big 4, getting CPA then looking at other things. All the people I talk to are chalking up the CPA and leading me to believe it is a valuable credential even if I want to be in the financial space not accounting.
