Background check on past internship history

I got an offer from a hedge fund, and recently they start background check through a third-party agent.

I interned in a company (outside US) about six years ago, on a cooperation project between my thesis supervisor and the company. I worked in the company for 3 months, and came back to school, but continued to work on exactly the same project for another 3 months.

On my resume, I put 6 months of internship experience. I did not even think to lie on this.
When the background company asked me to provide contact person of the internship, I suddenly noticed that might be an issue.

Shall I be worried about this at all? Shall I tell the BG check agent of the details of the story?

Any suggestions highly appreciated!

Background Check Employment History

Background checks seek to verify where and when you worked at the places you listed in your application. If there are any discrepancies, this could result in further inquiries or even termination. In the case of OP, he is probably fine. Any discrepancy is dates worked can be covered by a simple explanation and be corroborated by both the internship and the school.

I didn't put the internship experience on application forms or any other forms, just on my resume. But BG check company did catch that from my resume, and ask me to provide me contacts.

I just wonder shall I explain to them what's really happening in all details before they contact the company I interned.

The problem is that I worked onsite in the company for 3 months, and another 3 months at school, but on the same project..

I'm afraid it not explained clearly, the manager in the company will tell BG check agent that I only worked there for 3 months instead of 6.
